KKBOX has a variety of genres and plenty of content, including music and audiobooks for kids. These features are not easily discoverable under the current information architecture.
Data shows the habits of these users engaging with parenting content are quite consistent. They jump through hoops to reach to the category in the current structure.
We want to provide a better solution for our diverse listeners without affecting most users’ behaviors.
All the designers know that the design process presented in the design book is not how we solve problems in the real world.
Design process is non-linear and very flexible, we have 2 months to get the product up and running. With the time limits and technical considerations in mind, we decided to focus on understanding potential market needs and existing problems, build a very lean product and iterate quickly.
We started by questioning the product, are the amount of music and audiobooks enough for the users? Who are our competitors? What are our advantages and weaknesses?
In order to quickly prove our hypothesis and get the first impression, we designed prototypes and did quick user tests with potential users.
The understanding of user needs, pain points, and data insights ground us in decision making and keep everyone on the same page. We discovered that lots of users are surprised at the amount of the content, because they are hidden in the mother app.
The tight timeline was a challenge, but it helped us narrow down and focus on the essentials. We were able to build a minimum viable product by leveraging our existing resources, such as abundant music, audiobooks, live events, and knowledge from all departments.
Since it’s a side product, if it’s successful, we can easily assemble a more structured team to futher improve the product. Even if it fails, it’s a learning experience.
KKBOX Kids is still running in the market, with 4.9 ratings on App Store. It once hit the 7th in the education category on AppStore. It’s also chosen by Google Play as Best Hidden Gems of 2019.
